Making the Switch to E-Cigs-Part 2

Looking to Switch to Electronic from Combustible?

There’s one thing that non-smokers will never understand, and that’s quitting smoking is hard. Sure, there are some people that can give it up and never look back, but for most of us that smoked cigarettes for any length of time, quitting is not one of the most fun experiences you’ll ever have. But perhaps you’ve heard about vaping as a way to transition away from tobacco, so you plug “e-cig shop online” into your online browser and start checking out your options.

Many people in the United States and beyond have embraced vaping as a means of moving away from cigarettes and their side-effects. Yet sometimes it isn’t easy replacing one habit with another. We get that, and yesterday we shared a few tips you can keep in mind as you’re getting started. Today, we’re happy to share a few more.

  • It’s not easy to go from smoking a pack a day to vaping entirely, and some people incorrectly look at e-cigarettes as a magic bullet. We hate to say it, but they’re not, and “dual use,” where a person smokes cigarettes and vapes, is common initially. If you’re trying t make the switch, and you slip and smoke, don’t beat yourself up. Quitting is a long-term goal, and there are going to be bumps in the road. Instead of focusing on the cigarette you did smoke, pay more attention to the ones you didn’t.
  • Remember that vaping is similar to smoking, but it’s not identical. A common mistake made by new vapers is to puff their e-cig like a traditional cigarette, short draws and a fast inhalation of vapor. The thing is, in order to correctly puff on an e-cig, you need to take puffs that are slower and longer. By taking short and fast puffs, you’ll discover quickly that nothing happens. With a little bit of practice, you’ll get comfortable with vaping and receive more satisfaction.
  • The sensation you get in your throat when you vape is called a “throat hit.” It feels different than the drag of a cigarette, and sometimes it can be off-putting. That’s because your e-juice contains more than just flavor and nicotine. There are different ratios of vegetable glycol (VG) and propylene glycol (PG). For some people, the throat hit is a little too harsh, which means they’re sensitive to the PG and need an e-juice with a lower amount. Other folks feel that their throat hit is too mild, meaning that the ratio of VG is too high. Usually, people start with an e-juice that has an even 50/50 balance of PG and VG. If it doesn’t feel right to you, experiment with different ratios until you find the one right for you.
  • E-cigs are an extremely new technology, which means that there’s still a lot of research to be done regarding their effects and side-effects. You’ve probably seen or heard stories in the media about the potential risks of vaping. Sometimes, when people are exposed to information like that, they just decide that they might as well keep smoking. But remember that there are decades of peer-reviewed scientific data proving the physical harm and numerous side-effects caused by cigarette smoking. Vaping is a safer habit than smoking, so try not to be fooled by exaggerated news stories.
